The institution of marriage is one of God’s great gifts to humanity, and it will certainly be under great debate over the next few weeks as the Supreme Court looks at challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act.  Nevertheless, in today’s post, I simply want to point to the economic benefits of marriage, courtesy of this article published on CNBC back on Valentine’s Day.  The article notes

Couples who get and stay married can have as much as four times the wealth of their single or divorced peers. Experts say that’s not only because they can combine their salaries and share expenses once they get married.

Spouses are better off because of a combination of factors, starting with who is getting married these days.

“It’s more educated, more affluent and also more religious Americans that tend to get married in the first place,” said Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia.

The author lists other advantages for those with time to click through to the link.  Economists might like to point out the obvious familial division of labor and associated gains from specialization.  Marriage is a wonderful thing.  So, I have to thank Mrs. Haymond for putting up with me for 26 years!  As it says in Proverbs 19:14,

House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the LORD.
